We failed to convert opportunities --Rohr

Following the sorry defeat of the Super Eagles to Bafana Bafana of South Africa on Saturday, Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr rued the inability of his side to convert opportunities during the game.

The game which held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo ended 2-0 in favour of South Africa, who are now second in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group E behind Lybia.

The defeat was Rohr’s first loss since he took charge of the national team in August last year.

“We failed to convert our opportunities and when they scored, my young team became nervous and started to make mistakes,” the Franco-German said at a post-match interview.

“It is a sad result, but we win together and we lose together, and when a team gets this kind of result, it looks within and rectifies whatever shortcomings in order to achieve better results subsequently.

“This can only make us stronger.

“I think the next game with Cameroon will be very interesting. It will be better, much, much better.”

Speaking also after the game, South African coach expressed his happiness over the victor, stating that it was interesting beating Nigeria, in the opening round of the race to the ADCON finals in Cameroon.

“We opened up the game in the first half but unfortunately we did not score. Beating Nigeria is very interesting,” Baxter said.

“Nigeria is a very good side but my boys prevented them from scoring. We are trying to develop our boys and expose them.”

The Eagles will play their next fixture of the Afcon qualifiers against Seychelles in March, 2018, as Bafana will play host to Lybia in the same period.
