A decade after issuing illegally obtained authentic visas, authorities in Ghana have busted a fake U.S. embassy in the capital of Accra which is run by a criminal network.

According to the U.S. State Department, the sham embassy was housed in a run-down, pink two-storey building with a corrugated iron roof which flew a U.S. flag outside with a portrait of President Barack Obama hung inside the building.

“It was not operated by the United States government, but by figures from both Ghanaian and Turkish organised crime rings and a Ghanaian attorney practicing immigration and criminal law,” the State Department said in a statement released late on Friday.

Investigations revealed that the sham embassy was run by Turkish citizens, who spoke English and Dutch.

Reports say they impostors posed as consular officers and staffed the operation which has operated illegally in the last decade.
