Falana asks Buhari to deal with troublesome Senators

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to adopt decisive measures and terminate what he described as “reign of impunity” in the National Assembly, should the Senate fail to change its position on recent decisions.

Falana stated this in a statement he released on Wednesday, adding that recent developments in the Senate have proved that the lawmakers were over stepping their constitutional mandate.

Among the developments for which he advised the President to adopt decisive measures against the Senate is the decision by the Senate not to screen the 27 newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners until President Buhari sacks Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu.

Falana also argued that the decision by the Senate to summon the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Itse Sagay (SAN), because he criticised it, was nothing but a display of impunity by the lawmakers.

The human rights lawyer went further to say that the Senate also violated settled principles of law in its decision to suspend former majority Leader of the Senate, Senator Ndume, for six months.

He, therefore, called on the Senate to reverse those decisions, saying that failure to do so, Buhari should “adopt decisive measures” to stop them.

“In view of the settled state of the law as expatiated upon in the aforementioned cases the Senate is advised to reverse its illegal decisions and quickly return to the path of constitutionalism in the interest of lasting democracy in the country.

“However, if the Senate remains intransigent the Executive branch of the government should adopt decisive measures to terminate the rein of impunity in the National Assembly,” he said.
