Former football star, John Fashanu, has urged Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi to lay claim to regular action with Middlesbrough after joining the Championship side on Wednesday.

Fashanu lauded the midfielder’s move to the Riverside Stadium outfit stressing his stint at the club will be crucial to Nigeria’s outing at the 2019 AFCON.

Mikel returned to England where he spent 10 years at Chelsea by joining Steve Mc Claren’s side from Chinese Super League club Tianjin Teda and with the 24-team AFCON slated for June, the 31-year-old is seen as one of the key men in Gernor Rohr’s team to Egypt and Fashanu says it’s important Mikel sees regular action.

“The other thing I observed is that he wants to get more competitive before the Nations Cup because it’s a very big stage as far as African football is concerned,” he told New Telegraph.
