Fayose meets bail conditions, may leave prison Monday

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, may regain his freedom from prison on Monday.

This was as the former governor’s aide, Lere Olayinka, said in a message on his Twitter handle on Friday that Fayose has met the requirements for his bail.

He said, “On @GovAyoFayose bail, as at 2pm today, (Friday) all necessary documents were filed before the court and verified.

“Hopefully, he should be out of custody by Monday. We thank Nigerians for their support.”

Fayose was first arraigned on Monday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 11 counts bordering on criminal breach of trust, stealing and money laundering before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

He was however granted bail by Justice Mojisola Olatoregun on Wednesday in the sum of N50 million with two sureties in like sum, after he pleaded not guilty.

The judge had said that one of the sureties should sign a N50 million bond from a reputable bank; while the other must own a landed property within Lagos.

She added that the sureties are to show evidence of three years tax clearance.

The judge ordered that Fayose should be remanded in the prison custody until he meets the bail conditions and adjourned till November 19, 2018 for the commencement of trial.

Fayose had submitted himself to the EFCC on October 16 and remained in the custody of the anti-graft agency until he was arraigned in court.

The commission is prosecuting Fayose alongside a firm, Spotless Limited said to be owned by him and his family.

Among other things, the EFCC alleged that on June 17, 2014, Fayose “took possession of the sum of N1, 219, 000,000 to fund your 2014 gubernatorial campaign in Ekiti State, which you reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit: criminal breach of trust/stealing.”
