Fears of fresh violence in Kenya as protesters gather for ‘inauguration’ of opposition leader Odinga

There are fears of a fresh outbreak of violence in Kenya as scores of supporters of Raila Odinga have gathered in Nairobi ahead of a planned inauguration ceremony to swear in the opposition leader as president.

Reports say security in the Kenyan capital has been tightened ahead of the self-declared “inauguration” with authorities shutting down independent TV stations across the country.

Citizen, NTV and KTN TV stations said on Tuesday that authorities took the independent broadcasters off air over plans to cover the ceremony at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park. The channels’ Live YouTube streams were not affected.

The move is coming three months after Odinga boycotted presidential election re-run and a month after the opposition party reportedly postponed the swearing-in of an alternative president in the person of their leader Odinga.

Reports say the decision to swear in Odinga as an alternative president comes after the opposition party failed to come to a compromise with the government of President Uhuru Kenyatta who emerged winner of the last polls with 98.2% of votes in an election marred by violence and mass boycott.
