Federer admits his chances of winning US open is slim

Tennis star, Roger Federer admits it would be a ‘joke’ if he was to win a third Grand Slam of the season at the forthcoming US Open.

Having won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year to take his overall tally to 19 majors, the 36-year old insists he must be “realistic” about his chances at the event.

“That would be a joke, if I won three slams this year out of nowhere,” Federer told CNN Sport.

Federer only returned to the game in January 2017 after six-month after spending a large portion of last season injured.

But the Swiss beat rival Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final in January and did not drop a set on his way to an eighth title at Wimbledon in July.

He said: “I know if I stay in shape there are chances for me to do well at the US Open, but to win it? Yeah, at some stage I almost feel like I have to be realistic.

“I am not 25 anymore. I’m not sure I can win three slams in one year. Winning two is already pretty crazy and plenty good enough for me.”

Federer has already completed the Australian, Wimbledon and US Open treble three times in his career in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

The US Open begins August 28 in New York and the 19-time Grand Slam champion will go ‘prepared and ready’ as he bids for a 20th title.

“I’ll definitely try and get myself organized, prepared and ready so that I’ll have the best chance to do well at the US Open,” he said.
