Federer to battle Cilic in 2017 Wimbledon final

Roger Federer will be facing Marin Cilic in Sunday’s Wimbledon Men’s Single final as the Swiss bids for his 8th title at the All England Club.

He added to his lengthy list of achievements by reaching a record 29th Grand Slam final after beating the 11th seeded Czech Tomas Berdych in straight sets in the semi-final on Friday.

The 35-year old won 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to reach the last two.

This is Federer’s 11th wimbledon final; the last time he won the title was in 2012.

Having waited five years to win his 18th Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January, Federer could lift a record 19th on Sunday.

“I feel very privileged to be in another final,” said Federer after the win

“I’ve got the pleasure to play on Centre Court another time. I can’t believe it’s almost true again. I’m happy to have a day off to reflect on what I’ve done at the tournament.”

Federer will now face 28-year-old Cilic, who earlier on Friday defeated American 24th seed Sam Querrey 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 to advance to the final.

Cilic is into his second major final after winning the 2014 US Open, and Federer expressed some respect for him.

“Marin is a great guy. He’s a lovely guy, in his first Wimbledon final,” Federer remarked.

“He crushed me at the US Open a few years ago – I hope he doesn’t play that good.”
