Federer eases past Krajinovic at Miami Open, to face Medvedev in last-16

Roger Federer is into the fourth round of the Miami Open after sealing a straight-set win over world number 103 Filip Krajinovic.

The Swiss, who is bidding for a fourth title in Miami, beat Serbia’s Krajinovic 7-5 6-3.

Federer hit 14 aces against Krajinovic and won 74% of first-serve points.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has won 14 and lost two matches on the ATP Tour this season.

He will face Russian Daniil Medvedev in the last 16.

Earlier, Australian world number 77 Jordan Thompson beat Bulgarian 29th seed Grigor Dimitrov 7-5 7-5 to reach the fourth round.

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson continued his return from an arm injury with a 6-4 7-6 (8-6) win over Joao Sousa of Portugal.

In the Women’s Singles, Simona Halep claimed her fourth successive win over Venus Williams, beating her 6-3 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

She now faces China’s Qiang Wang, who defeated compatriot Yafan Wang 7-5 6-4.

Second seed Petra Kvitova also defeated France’s Caroline Garcia 6-3 6-3 to reach the last eight.

As it stands, either Halep or Kvitova could replace Naomi Osaka as world number one at the end of the tournament.
