Federer moves to World No. 4 after beating Nadal to win 3rd Miami Open​ title

Tennis superstar Roger Federer will return to fourth in the world rankings after overcoming long-term rival Rafael Nadal in Sunday’s final to win the Miami Open for the third time.

The Swiss continues his remarkable start to the season as he has now won 19 games in the 20 he has played so far.

The 35-year old has now beaten Nadal thrice this year, first at the Australian Open in January, second in March at Indian Wells, and now with a convincing 6-3 6-4 win over the Spaniard.

This is his fourth straight win over Nadal – his longest winning streak in their 13-year professional rivalry – also makes Federer the oldest winner of the Miami Open.

“The dream continues,” he said after the win. “It’s been a fabulous couple of weeks. What a start to the year, thank you to my team and all who have supported me, especially in my more difficult challenging times last year.”

Nadal, who battled Federer at the Australian Open in five sets, rarely looked like he would land a first Miami title in what was his fifth final.

“It’s disappointing that every time in my career I have stood here I get the smaller trophy,” he said. “It’s been a very good two weeks for me. Even if I lost for the third time this year to Roger it’s a good start, playing three finals.”

Federer and Nadal first played one another in Miami in 2004 and have now met 37 times since, with Nadal winning in 23 of their meetings and Federer, 14. The professional rivalry continues.
