Floods: NSCDC deploys disaster officers to Kogi, Niger, others

Nigerian government on Tuesday blamed developers who build houses, or other structures on waterways for the imminent flood in the country.

It said that building on waterways and dumping refuse in drainages are among the major causes of flooding in various communities.

It however, vowed to sanction developers who build houses or other structures on waterways.

The government-issued the threat on Tuesday in Abuja through the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Prof Aliyu Jauro.

Jauro promised that NESREA would implement its regulations to resolve the problems associated with poor waste management.

He said: “NESREA, being an agency of the Federal Ministry of Environment, has 33 environmental regulations that deal with waste management. The agency would fully implement the regulations in a bid to resolve problems associated with poor waste management.

“We have different types of waste, such as e-waste, medical waste, solid and liquid waste. But our regulations in the area of medical waste will soon be ready. NESREA is collaborating with similar agencies on sound environmental management since its regulations cover issues on desertification and flooding.

“If you go to most of our cities, you will discover that residents dump refuse on water channels and during heavy rains, the refuse will block the water channels and lead to flooding”.
