FG putting negotiation team together for Niger Delta

Buhari suspects engineers assist militants in bombing pipelines

There are indications that the Federal Government may have started making efforts to raise a dialogue/negotiation team that will meet with elders and leaders from the Niger Delta.

The proposed dialogue with militants in the oil rich region has been on the front burner for months since the resumption of militancy in the region.

The dialogue has been long in coming partly because the federal government has not been forthcoming in putting together its own team even after the militants raised various teams in the past.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari met with leaders and elders under the leadership of Chief Edwin Clark, raising hope for the commencement of dialogue.

The raising of a Federal Government Dialogue team is one of the demands given by the Edwin Clark team.
According to reports, the National Security Adviser, NSA and security chiefs have started deliberating on it on the instruction of President Buhari.

A source who is privy to the development said, “the problem is that Niger Delta people are frustrating him (Buhari). He told them bluntly when they visited him that as leaders, they should control their youths who are bombing pipelines, as he was not impressed with their level of control.

“Those who misunderstood him said all manner of things, but as we all know, even before the meeting, militants bombed a pipeline barely 24 hours after the meeting, they blew up more. They are making government doubt their commitment to the peace process.”

The militants’ actions in that region has impacted severely on the economy of the nation with resources acruing to government adversely reduced, making it unable to meet its financial obligations in many areas.

Raising a dialogue team that will not include the militants themselves will make no difference. I hope the Presidency understand this….so we don’t waste time, efforts and money for nothing!

I don’t think Buhari should worry himself too much about the militants. He should do the right thing and the Niger Delta militants will reason along with him, but without doing what’s required of him, the attacks will definitely continue.

The Fedral Government is doing all it can to bring peace to the unrest Niger-Delta, however, the militants are not helping matters. They have too many factions claiming to be fighting the same cause.

The Clark-led committee has sent in its own recommendations and demands. The militants are still bombing NNPC facilities, not agreeing to the negotiation between the aforementioned committee and FG. Later it was HOSTCOM adding more to the demands. Bombing didn’t stop. The FG cannot please these people, never!
