FG to spend N1.4bn on IDPs in 2016

Perhaps as an indication of its commitment towards the welfare of the internally displaced persons across the north eastern region of the country, the federal government has earmarked N1.4 billion in the 2016 budget for the Construction, Reconstruction and Renovation of residential accommodation for IDPs.

In the draft copy of the 2016 appropriation budget currently with the National Assembly, the expenditures will also cater for IDPs and refugees’ educational and healthcare welfare at a cost of N109,500,000; and another supply of educational and healthcare materials for refugees N21,032,000.

The National Commission for Refugee which will be spending these monies has earmarked N30, 000, 000 for the Provision of Standard Assistance Package (SAP) for refugees; N301,250,000 for the Provision of starter packs for trained IDPs; N30,000,000 to Provide standard assistance package for returnees; N14.5 million for Starter packs and another N14.5 million for Agric inputs and implements to refugees.

On its part, the National Boundary Commission, is asking to spend N194,929,400 for the Empowerment of Displaced Persons; N300,000,000 for the Provision of credible data for border community development; N610,000,000 for the Construction of modular resettlement scheme for the resettlement of internally displaced persons across the border communities; N10,000,000 for the Construction of infrastructural support to border community to enhance economic empowerment and poverty alleviation.

The commission also intends to spend an additional N462,260,894 for the construction of infrastructural support to border community to enhance economic empowerment and poverty alleviation and procurement of agricultural tools.
