FG, Zamfara partner to harness mineral resources for economic growth

The Federal Government has pledged to collaborate with Zamfara State to tap into the state’s vast mineral resources, boosting economic development and revenue generation.

Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, made this commitment during a meeting with Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal in Abuja, on Friday.

“Zamfara is among Nigeria’s most resource-rich states, particularly in solid minerals,” Alake noted. “It is essential for all levels of government to collaborate in responsibly exploiting these resources and ensuring that the revenue benefits both Zamfara citizens and Nigerians as a whole.”

Lawal emphasized the need for cooperation between the state and federal governments to address challenges in the mining sector. “We discussed security concerns and strategies to better utilize our mineral resources for the benefit of both Zamfara and the nation,” he said. “We need to explore the necessary infrastructure to attract investors to solid minerals.”

This partnership comes on the heels of Lawal’s January directive banning traditional rulers from issuing consent letters for mining activities across the state. The move aimed to curb the unregulated approval of mining consent letters, which exposed the state to security risks and banditry.

A statement issued then by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, disclosed that the executive order was signed to stop one of the worst trends in the fight against banditry.

According to him, the order has banned all consent letters for mining. “This includes consent letters to individuals, companies, or organisations for mining activities.”

The partnership between the federal government and Zamfara State is expected to yield significant economic benefits, create jobs, and stimulate growth in the mining sector.

By working together, both levels of government can unlock Zamfara’s vast mineral potential, driving Nigeria’s economic development and prosperity.
