World football governing body, FIFA, has placed a two-year ban on former African Footballer of the Year, Kalusha Bwalya.

Bwalya, who won the Player award in 1988 before going to become coach of the Zambia national team and president of the Zambian Football Association, is an executive committee member of CAF.

The 54-year old had been under investigation since February 2017 which was “focused principally on benefits” he had received from banned Qatari official Mohammed Bin Hammam, according to a FIFA statement.

Bin Hammam was banned for life from football by Fifa in 2011 for his part in a cash-for-votes scandal.

Fifa’s Ethics Committee said Bwalya is banned for two years from “all football-related activities at both national and international level”.

“The adjudicatory chamber found Mr Bwalya guilty of having violated article 16 (confidentiality) and article 20 (offering and accepting gifts and other benefits) of the Fifa Code of Ethics.

“A fine in the amount of 100,000 Swiss francs ($100,600, £78,900) was also imposed on Mr Bwalya,” the Fifa statement added.

The former Zambia international will not participate in any football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) for two years.
