FIFA extends NFF ban on Giwa, 4 other officials

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) on Tuesday extended the ban imposed on five Nigerian officials by the Disciplinary Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in 2016.

The officials include Christopher Giwa, Muazu Suleyman, Yahaya Adama, Sani Fema and Johnson Effiong, who were sanctioned in May last year for breaches of the Federation’s ethic codes in relation to the contest for the leadership of Nigerian football.

As it can be recalled, the problems in the NFF at the time surfaced in April when a Federal High Court sitting in Jos, Plateau state, ordered that the administration of Amaju Pinnick vacate the Glass House in favour of Giwa who is to take charge temporarily.

But FIFA had in a letter threatened to ban the NFF from all international engagements if the court injunction was carried out.

After all was settled, with the Sports Minister Dalung being on the side of the serving leadership, the NFF finally placed a five-year ban on Christopher Giwa and the four others from football-related activities.

The full statement as published on the FIFA website reads:

“FIFA can today confirm the worldwide extension of sanctions imposed by the Nigerian Football Federation’s (NFF) Disciplinary Committee on 12 May 2016 against the officials Christopher Giwa, Muazu Suleyman, Yahaya Adama, Sani Fema and Johnson Effiong for breaches of the NFF Statutes and the FIFA Code of Ethics.

In accordance with art. 136ff of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to extend the five-year ban from taking part in any kind of football-related activity imposed on the five officials to have worldwide effect.

The relevant member association as well as CAF have been duly notified of the chairman’s decision.

Members of the media with questions relating to the substance of the decision are kindly requested to contact the NFF.”
