FIFA Ranking: Eagles retain third spot in Africa, slip three places in world

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be playing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) billed to kickoff later this month, as the third best team in Africa.

The team retained their continental position in the latest FIFA rankings released on Friday by the world football governing body.

However, despite moving up four places in the previous ranking in April and picking up a goalless draw against the Warriors of Zimbabwe ina friendly, the Gernot Rohr side slipped three places to 45th in the world rankings.

Nigeria now rank , and are behind the Teranga Lions of Senegal, who are ranked 22th in the world, and the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, ranked 25th.

in fourth to tenth spots in Africa are Morocco [47], DR Congo [49], Ghana [50], Cameroon [51], Egypt [58], Burkina Faso [59] and Mali [62], with all sides participating at the AFCON.

The Super Eagles are currently having their final lap of preparations in Ismailia, Egypt ahead of the tournament.

They will face the Teranga Lions in another friendly on June 16, which would be the final warm up game before the AFCON finals begin on June 21, with hosts Egypt playing Zimbabwe.

Nigeria have been drawn against Burundi, Madagascar and Guinea in Group B of the competition, and will kick-start their campaign against the Swallows of Burundi on Saturday, June 22 at the Alexandra Stadium.

The Eagles are considered favourites of the group.
