Fighting continues at Indian Air Force base

More than a day and a half after the Pathankot air base compound near the border of Pakistan came under attack, Indian troops are still fighting at least two gunmen a top government official informs.

Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi told reporters the two suspected militants were discovered shortly after noon Sunday and hours later appeared to have been cornered, adding that he expected the gunmen to be “neutralized” soon.

At least seven troops and four gunmen have been killed in the fighting so far and the attack which started before dawn on Saturday. The attack is seen as an attempt to undo recent improvements in the relationship between arch rivals India and Pakistan.

The gun battle comes a week after Narendra Modi became the first Indian prime minister in 12 years to visit Pakistan.
