Finance minister denies report on limiting number of birth

The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, on Wednesday denied reports quoting her as saying that the Federal Government is working on a policy that will put a ceiling to the number of children a mother can have in the country.

Media reports had quoted the minister as saying this on Tuesday at one of the sessions of the 24th Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja.

She was said to have hinted that traditional rulers and other leaders across the country were being engaged as regards to the move and explained that the move was aimed at addressing one of the “great challenges” in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) of the Federal Government.

But refuting the claim in a series of tweets on her Twitter handle, she wrote: “The Federal Government has been engaging critical stakeholders like traditional and religious leaders to advise their members on child spacing.

“We never said we are placing a cap on childbirth. What is child spacing? This is a healthy practice of waiting between pregnancies.”
