FIRS to probe companies evading taxes

Published

on

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) may soon  begin probing some companies involved in tax evasion. This followed allegations that most companies operating with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), including Trafigura Nigeria Ltd, Aiteo Nigeria Ltd and Duke Oil Global Investment failed to file tax returns.

It would be recalled that most companies involved in the ongoing probe by Adhoc Committee of the House of Representatives into oil swap deals are said not to have tax returns records with the FIRS.

The FIRS had informed the House Committee on Wednesday that Duke Oil Global Investment refused to furnish it with its tax returns.

However, Duke Oil’s Managing Director, Abdulkadir Seidu said the letter written to his office was not addressed to his company.

Speaking at the hearing, FIRS Coordinating Director (Domestic Taxes group), Babatunde Ajayi said a trading firm involved in the NNPC oil swap arrangement, Trafigura Nigeria Ltd has not filed any tax returns with the agency despite engaging in oil transactions in Nigeria.

A representative of the company, James Juslin however informed the Committee that the company has no tax obligations to Nigeria being an international company.

The House Ad hoc Committee however mandated the FIRS to get to work by interacting with all the affected companies with a view to ensuring that all the taxes were recovered from them.
