The latest wave of terror attacks to hit Turkey saw gunmen attack a popular night club killing no less than 39 people and wounded dozens more.

According to Turkey’s interior minister Suleyman Soylu, fifteen or sixteen of the 39 people killed when a gunman attacked the nightclub in Istanbul on Sunday were foreigners, but only 21 of the bodies have so far been identified.

The minister added that police are hunting one “terrorist” after the attack that hit the night spot in Ortakoy neighbourhood at around 1:45am on Sunday.

The attacker according to Governor Vasip Sahin was armed with a long-barreled weapon. He said the gunman killed a policeman and a civilian outside the Reina club before entering and firing at people partying inside.

“A terrorist with a long-range weapon … brutally and savagely carried out this incident by firing bullets on innocent people who were there solely to celebrate the New Year and have fun,” he said at the scene.
