Flood has killed 16 persons and destroyed 3,936 houses in Jigawa State.

The Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. Haruna Mariga, who disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday, said the flood also submerged 2,744 hectares of farmlands following torrential rainfalls since the commencement of the 2024 rainy season.

He added that the disaster affected 10 local government areas of the state.

Mairiga said the deaths followed building collapse, drowning, and canoe mishaps in the state.

He said: “The disaster resulted in 16 deaths with 3,936 persons displaced while 2,744 hectares of farmlands submerged.”

The SEMA chief warned that the situation might escalate due to the high volume of rainfall in many parts of the state.

Mairiga said the agency had provided temporary shelter and distributed relief materials to the displaced persons to mitigate their sufferings.

He listed the items as rice, maize, maize, blankets, pasta, and mats.
