Flying Eagles held to goalless draw by S’Africa in U-20 AFCON

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria were held to a goalless draw by their South African counterparts in their second group match at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The game played at the Stade General Seyni Kountche in Niger Republic saw a defensive South Africa pick their second draw in the campaign, having played 1-1 in their opener against hosts Niger.

Nigeria dominated possession and created chances to score but shots by Abubakar Ibrahim, Maxwell Effiom and Nazifi Yahaya were all denied by outstanding South Africa’s goalkeeper, Khulekani Kubheka.

The Flying Eagles won a free kick towards the end of the match but were denied taking it as the match official blew the final whistle right after awarding the free kick.

Nigeria however remain on top of the Group A table with four points from two games, as they had won their first match 2-0 against Burundi.

The Paul Aigbogun lads will take on hosts Niger in their final group match on Friday, as they hope to seal their place in the semifinal of the tournament as well as a spot in the 2019 U-20 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa will battle Burundi concurrently.
