Forget about serving in my cabinet, Obaseki tells opposition members

Edo State Governor-elect, Godwin Obaseki, has said members of opposition political parties in the state should not expect him to appoint them as members of his cabinet when he is sworn in.

Obaseki, who was declared winner of the September 28 governorship election in the state by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, stated this at an interactive session with journalists in Benin at the weekend.

He is billed to be sworn in on December 12.

According to the governor-elect, it is possible for him to explain the focus and vision of his administration to members of the opposition, but non of them, would be appointed as commissioners in his administration.

It would be recalled that outgoing governor, Adams Oshiomhole, had in 2008, during his first tenure, appointed three members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as  commissioners.

Obaseki said, “I will not be able to accept anybody from the opposition political parties as a commissioner in my cabinet.”

Speaking further, Obaseki said he would soon set up a team that would be saddled with the responsibility of preparing the 2017 budget for the state.

The governor-elect, who said the budget prepration would enable him to hit the ground running, explained that he has only four weeks to do so before the state House of Assembly goes on recess.
