Trump fired me to undermine FBI's Russia/Trump campaign probe, Comey says

The controversy surrounding President Donald Trump’s campaign team and its ties with Russia is about to deepen with sacked FBI director James Comey offering to testify in an open session before the American Senate.

The development is coming as Trump leaves on his first foreign trip and Comey confirming that he will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee about the bureau’s probe into Russian meddling with the 2016 U.S. election.

Comey’s decision to testify before the American Senate was announced late Friday by committee Chairman Richard Burr, of North Carolina, and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat.

Trump fired Comey about 10 days ago in a move which according to him was to restore public trust.

Trump said Comey who had been leading an FBI investigation into allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election was no longer able to effectively lead the law-enforcement agency.

Comey’s sacking has raised dust and fuelled concerns about the integrity of the inquiry into Russia’s meddling and also renewed calls for an independent investigation into the matter.
