Bail hearing for former Zimbabwe finance minister postponed

The heat has now been directed at allies of ousted Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe as his former Finance Minister Ignatius Chombo has been slapped with corruption charges.

Reports say Chombo who appeared in court yesterday (Saturday) will now be detained till Monday, when a court will rule on a bail application on his corruption trial which is coming after Mugabe’s ousting.

Chombo was slammed with charges of corruption and abuse of power related to his earlier tenure as minister of local government, public works and urban development.

According to reports, the former minister who is believed to own more than 100 properties in Zimbabwe alone was arrested by masked gunmen on November 15, the day Zimbabwe’s army seized control of the state.

His lawyer, Lovemore Madhuku, said Chobo had to be admitted to a government hospital for injuries allegedly sustained from beatings while in detention.

“He was released on Thursday and taken into police custody on Friday, appeared in court on Saturday and will be detained till Monday for his bail application hearing,” Madhuku said.
