Wild protests have erupted with tens of thousands of people blocking roads across France during ‘yellow vest’ rallies over the rising price of fuel in the country.

Reports say the rally turned violent when a protester was accidentally run over and killed by a car as an estimated 240,000 people gathered on Saturday at 2,000 locations, blocking roundabouts and motorway exits.

According to reports, the protesters blame President Emmanuel Macron’s “green taxes” for the 20-percent rise in diesel prices in the last year.

Clashes broke out between the police and protesters, during which the security forces used tear gas with at least 47 people declared injured during the clashes with three of them in critical condition.

The police said 227 people were injured – seven seriously – and 117 detained, with 73 then taken into custody.
