France drops arrest warrant for Ivory Coast speaker

Published

on

Respite has come the way of Ivory Coast’s speaker of parliament, Guillaume Soro, after a French judge dropped his warrant of arrest.

The warrant was issued following a complaint lodged by Michel Gbagbo (who has dual French and Ivorian nationality) who alleged that Mr. Soro’s forces kidnapped and tortured him after his father’s capture in 2011.

The arrest warrant was for not turning up in a 2012 Paris court case brought by the ex-Ivorian president’s son.

Mr Soro was in France on an official mission when the arrest warrant was issued and according to his lawyers, the coast is now clear for him to go about his business if in France.

The judge lifted the warrant following proof he is on official business in Paris, giving him diplomatic immunity.
It could be recalled that Mr Soro commanded a rebel force which fought the ex-president, who has been charged by the International Criminal Court with war crimes – charges he denies.
