FRANCE: World Cup winners receive highest national honour

Following their triumph at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the French team will receive their country’s highest honour, the Légion d’Honneur, the France presidency has announced.

Didier Deschamp’s men emerged winners of the Russia showpiece after they defeated Croatia 4-2 in a thrilling final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Sunday.

The feat meant they have won the World Cup twice, having won the prize 20 years ago on home soil.

The team landed back in Paris on Monday, as crowds of fans lined the Champs-Elysées in central Paris to give the them a heroes’ welcome.

The players will be honoured with a parade on the capital’s main artery and a presidential reception, and will take an open-top bus along the avenue later on Monday.

According to reports, some 3,000 people have been invited to the reception at the Elysée presidential palace, including 1,000 youths from football clubs around the country.

The next edition of the World Cup will take place in Qatar in 2022.
