French amphibious carrier arrives Korean Peninsula in show of pacific power

In a show of Pacific power directed at defiant North Korea led by hard stance leader Kim Jong Un, a French amphibious carrier has arrived the Japanese Naval base in Sasebo, which is close to the Korean Peninsula.

It’s arrival is expected to see the assault carrier lead exercises next month near Guam, along with forces from Japan, the United States and Britain, practicing amphibious landings around Tinian, an island about 2,500 km (1,553 miles) south of the Japanese capital of Tokyo.

The forthcoming drills risks upsetting China, which faces U.S. pressure to rein sanctions against North Korea’s constant ballistic missile tests and activities.

Meanwhile, both China and Russia have both rebuked the US over proposed sanctions and military threat against North Korea.

Both countries expressed their displeasure at a meeting of the U.N. Security Council on North Korea which also highlighted the diplomatic challenges of resolving tensions over Pyongyang.

The US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told the United Nations Security Council that it is time to take action against the North led by Kim Jong Un amid its continued missile activities.

Tillerson warned on Friday that failure to curb North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs could lead to ‘catastrophic consequences.

Reacting to Tillerson’s call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the 15-member council it was not only up to China to solve the North Korean problem.
