The Action Peoples Party (APP) has won 22 out of 23 chairmanship seats in Saturday’s local government election in Rivers State.

The commission however suspended the declaration of results for Etche LGA due to ongoing collation in the area.

The chairman of the state’s Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Adolphus Enebeli, announced the results at the Ministry of Justice Hall at the State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt.

He said the winner of the 319 councillorship seats would be announced alongside that of the Etche LGA chairmanship position at the end of the collation.

The state was in the spotlight in the days leading to the election with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesome Wike, and his loyalists in the State House of Assembly pushing for the suspension of the exercise while the government vowed to forge ahead with it.

Governor Siminilaye Fubara on Wednesday declared a two-day public holiday in the state to enable the residents to participate in the election.

Many of the governor’s loyalists contested the election on the APP platform.

With this development, Fubara has regained control of the local government structure in the state.
