Gabon President rages over disappearance of hardwood containers worth $250 million

Gabon’s president, Ali Bongo has vowed to find and punish those responsible for the disappearance of more than 350 containers of protected hardwood worth nearly $250m.

Earlier in the year, between February and March, about 392 containers loaded with 5,000 cubic metres of illegally felled kevazingo wood was uncovered and seized by police officials in the port of Owendo.

However, 353 of those containers had disappeared by the end of April.

The president in a statement on Monday, described the case as grave, stating that severe sanctions will be discharged irrespective of the rank of the persons involved.

According to Aljazeera, the kevazingo in the stolen containers runs at an estimate of at least $241m in terms of its market value.
