Gambia's Army chief switches allegiance from Barrow to Jammeh

General Ousman Badjie, Gambia’s army chief has pledged his support for President Yahya Jammeh in the face of a possible regional military intervention by ECOWAS to enforce the result of an election that saw the long-time leader lose to opposition leader Adama Barrow.

“May I please seize this opportunity to renew to your Excellency the assurance of the unflinching loyalty and support of the Gambia Armed Forces,” General Badjie wrote in a letter to Jammeh published in a pro-government newspaper.

It could be recalled that Badjie declared his allegiance to Barrow soon after the poll results were announced, according to a spokesman for the president-elect.

However Badjie’s has switched allegiance to Jammeh in what many see as a move not to incur the wrath the incumbent President after his dramatic about-face.
