Garbine Muguruza defeats Venus Williams to lift 1st Wimbledon title

Garbine Muguruza has lifted her first Wimbledon title after beating Venus Williams in Saturday’s Women’s Singles final at the All England Club.

The Spaniard The 23-year-old saved two set points in the first set on her way to a 7-5 6-0 victory under the Centre Court roof.

The result denied 37-year-old Williams a sixth title at Wimbledon and a first major title for nine years, which would have made her the oldest female Grand Slam champion in the Open era.

After a hard-fought opening set lasting almost an hour, Muguruza needed just another 23 minutes to wrap her first Wimbledon title.

It is the 14th seed’s second Grand Slam title after her French Open triumph over Serena Williams in 2016.

In the Men’s Singles final, which will hold on Sunday, former champion Roger Federer will face Marin Cilic as the third Grand Slam of the Year draws to an end.
