Gbajabiamila’s 5th term bid for re-election to House meets stiff opposition

The bid by House of Representatives’ Majority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila to continue for a fifth time as the representative of Surulere Federal Constituency I at the National Assembly has met stiff opposition.

This is as some members of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the constituency, who are aspiring for Gbajabiamila’s position, have asked the lawmaker to give way for another person having served four terms already.

The development is coming as the Lagos State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Agboola Dabiri, and a board member of the National Agricultural Extension Liaison Services, Mrs. Ganiat Alli-Balogun, had at a recent occasion led some members of the constituents to endorse Gbajabiamila’s fifth term bid.

But the aspirants, responding to that claim, said in a joint statement on Friday that the constituency has not endorsed Gbajabiamila.

“Surulere Federal Constituency I is a cosmopolitan area in Lagos State with a huge educated youth population, mostly working class. It is an economic hub, but politically, there is apathy in the constituency due to marginalisation, monopoly and disenfranchising of the constituents’ choice of representation.

“Hence, the incumbent (Gbajabiamila), after having nearly served out four terms of 16 years against the outcry of the constituents that there should be no room for a fifth term, is now resorting to undemocratic means to actualise his agenda. The constituents are opposed to this ab initio,” the statement read in part.

Among the aspirants who are out to ensure the Reps Majority Leader does not return to the House are Mr. Ifeoluwa Chris, the convener of the ‘Not Too Young To Run’ initiative in the federal constituency; Mrs. Sherifat Ogbara; Mr. Adetoun Adediran; Mr. Kabiru Lawal, also known as Caesar, and Mrs. Bolanle Muazu.
