GENOCIDE IN S’KADUNA: IGP to face Senate
The Senate on Tuesday, summoned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris to appear before the relevant committees on plans to end the genocide in the southern part of Kaduna State.
The invitation of the IGP, followed a motion moved by Senator Danjuma La’ah (PDP, Kaduna South), calling for the declaration of state of emergency over the situation in his Senatorial District.
Idris is expected to meet with the Senate committee on Police Affairs. The outcome of the briefing will be submitted to the Senate for further consideration and legislative action.
Senator La’ah while drawing the attention of lawmakers to the under reported killings, said there has been regular attacks by armed herdsmen, the latest being the 16th of October, 2016, which resulted in several deaths, injuries and wanton destruction of properties worth billions of naira.
He said the armed herdsmen have occupied the displaced communities and are grazing their livestock freely.

The lawmaker revealed that there is a general atmosphere of insecurity in Southern Kaduna Senatorial District and that local inhabitants cannot access their farm holdings and crops which he said are ripe for harvest.
He lamented that efforts by the Kaduna State Government, as well as the Federal Government to restore peace in the area are inadequate to prevent more attacks.
Collaborating Senator La’ah’s story, Shehu Sani who represents Kaduna Central, called on the Senate to ensure that peace is restored to the troubled area of the state.
He said previous attempts by both the State and Federal Governments to stop the killings, did not yield results, and that the entire area was under serious attacks.
Meanwhile, the Senate has rejected pleas by Senator La’ah to include Southern Kaduna in the just passed North East Development Commission (NEDC).
The Senator who pleaded that the inclusion of the Senatorial District will help in rebuilding the place, said it will be impossible for state government to take on the task alone.
