German police nab Syrian-born man suspected of planning bomb attacks

Two days after launching a man hunt for a Syrian-born man Jaber Albakr, 22, after explosives were found in his apartment following a raid which was carried out in his home on Saturday, the suspect has been arrested by German police.

“Tired but overjoyed: we captured the terror suspect last night in Leipzig,” Saxony state police said on twitter.

The suspect had slipped through the grasp of security operatives during a raid two days ago and he had been in Germany since last year and was officially recognised as a refugee, police said at the weekend.

“The overall picture of the investigation, in particular the amount of the explosive found, suggests that the person was planning to carry out an Islamist-motivated attack,” a spokesman for the Federal Prosecutor’s Office told broadcaster SWR on Sunday.
