Germany accuses Russia of 'aggressive espionage'

A diplomatic war is playing out between two of Europe’s power houses after Germany accused Russia of “aggressive espionage”.

Germany says the move by Russia is aimed at destabilising their economy with disinformation campaign and hacking ahead of 2017 election coming up in Germany.

The announcement made by Germany is the bluntest thus far about Moscow’s alleged campaign of disinformation and hacking targeting Europe’s biggest economy.

“There is growing evidence of attempts to influence the federal election next year,” said Hans-Georg Maassen, head of the BfV, citing “increasingly aggressive cyber espionage” against political entities in Germany.
