Ghana secures hosting rights for AFRIMA 2018

Ghana has been named as the official host for the 2018 edition of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, from November 21-24, following the receipt of a Letter of Intent sent by the African Union Commission, AUC.

The letter was addressed to the Commissioner of Social Affairs, African Union Commission, Mrs. Amira Elfadil and signed by the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ghana, Honourable Catherine Afeku.

“We are counting on the Republic of Ghana to fulfill all requirements and efforts to make AFRIMA 2018 a huge success. The 2018 edition of AFRIMA is also the 5th edition of the continental awards and the 5th AFRIMA remains steadfast to the AUC’s values of promoting African unity and celebrating cultural uniqueness through the program of events on the AFRIMA calendar between May and November 2018.

“Music and Entertainment are key sectors of the African culture industry stimulating the sustainable social development and growth of Africa. It is in this light that the AUC is determined to support these sectors to continue to contribute significantly to Africa`s development and favorable economic advantage on the global stage”, the AU Commissioner stated further.

The announcement of the host city for this year’s award is coming a month after organisers of AFRIMA, unveiled the much-anticipated nominee’s list for the forthcoming awards.

In all, a total of 79 songs made it to the regional nominee’s list which was revealed by the African Union Commission, AUC, and the International Jury of AFRIMA, during a World Media announcement.

The nominee’s list covers the five Regional Categories (male and female) including; North Africa, Central Africa, East Africa, South Africa, and West Africa.

Speaking on the parameters considered by the Jury during the adjudication process, Jury member representing Diaspora (North America), Hadja Kobélé Keita, a music executive with work experience in international music companies like Universal Music Africa and Island Africa, reiterated the AFRIMA objective, which is about rewarding and promoting talents and creativity in Africa.
