COVID-19: Global cases hit 2.4 million

More than 2.6 million people have been infected with covid-19 worldwide with a larger chunk of casualties still stemming from the United States according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.

There are now over 842,621 cases and 46,784 covid-19 related deaths in the US since the pandemic hit the region in Feb. 26, 2020.

In Germany where cases are speculated to reach its peak soon, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel has mandated the wearing of face masks in public places from Monday next week to curb the spread of the virus.

Reported cases according to the country’s center for disease control has exceeded 150,000 with a death toll rising above 5,000.

Japan’s infection rates have equally continued to spike in recent weeks despite the government’s initial efforts in containing the spread.

On Wednesday, the country’s health ministry recorded 422 new cases and 10 more deaths bringing the total number of cases to 12,631 and 300 deaths. Of the total figures, 712 cases and 13 fatalities were linked to offshore infections from the virus stricken Diamond Princess cruise ship.

In India, infection rates have surpassed 20,000 with deaths nearing 700 according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Government experts have warned that the country could see more 400,000 covid-19 related deaths if social distancing measures were not taken seriously.

The pandemic has reached 211 countries worldwide except Antarctica.
