Google taking Cardboard VR to the next level

Published

Tech giants Google is now taking the business of virtual reality serious as it seeks to look beyond Cardboard viewer to develop a much more sturdier VR headset brand which is in need of an upgrade.

While Cardboard has proved a worthy and very affordable entry-level solution for those curious about stepping into another world via their smartphone, Google is set to move to the next level.

According to Financial Times, Google plans to do away with the fold-yourself Cardboard viewer with a VR headset that has superior sensors and lenses housed in solid plastic.

Expected to be launched this September, the new product will offer better visual and quality lenses than the Cardboard and also incorporate sensors – just like the Gear VR.

Plans are also underway to ensure the device’s success as Google is said to be working on making its headset compatible with a much wider selection of smartphones than the Gear VR, which only works with a small number of Samsung Galaxy devices.

The Cardboard viewer which is now being phased out, was one of Google’s better ideas. The DIY-style device put VR directly in the hands of the masses while Occulus, Sony, HTC, and Samsung were busy shooting for the moon, and, in doing so, helped stoke interest in VR.
