BAUCHI: Gov Mohammed sacks special adviser six weeks after appointment

Some level of peace may have been attained in Bauchi as the crisis that engulfed the State House of Assembly appears resolved.

Indications to this effect emerged Friday as the factional Speaker, Kawuwa Damina, and the remaining 16 members made themselves available for an inauguration exercise witnessed by the State Governor, Bala Mohammed.

The Bauchi State House of Assembly had lived with crisis since June 20 when two Speakers emerged after members-elect held parallel inauguration ceremonies.

One leg of the inauguration activities had produced Abubakar Suleiman, who was elected by 13 members with the Clerk presiding, as Speaker while the other produced Kawuwa Damina as Speaker. The later had the backing of 17 members.

Damina led the 17 members who were inaugurated at a special session of the House held on Friday. It was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Danlami Kawule.

The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, was at the Assembly complex to witness the inauguration. Addressing the media shortly after, he described the event as a victory for democracy.

He also commended Damina and his group for choosing the path of reconciliation, noting that the crisis bedeviling the legislative arm of government was now over.

He said: “Bauchi State House of Assembly has always been one and what you have witnessed is the swearing-in ceremony of the remaining members of the House who are my bosses as the Governor, and in this business, Bauchi State has shown that it is the home of democracy.

“This misunderstanding and the resolution, by the grace of Allah, has shown that there is no victor, there is no vanquish. Those who came now, have exercised their democratic rights and of course, I am willing and ready to work with everyone of them and I have no malice against them and I want to tell the Federation of Nigeria, that in Bauchi, we practice participatory democracy at its best.”
