Govs want Okonjo-Iweala to account for $20bn ECA fund

Governors in Nigeria want the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala to explain to the country what has happened to an estimated $20bn, being money that should have accrued into the Excess Crude Account (ECA) between June 2013 and April 2015.

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) with representation from 17 states after a meeting in Abuja early Tuesday, stated that the explanation became pertinent, given that funds in the excess crude account were last disbursed in May 2013.

They called on the minister to give account of how much of this money entered the said account within the period in question.

The call was contained in a Communiqué read at the end of the meeting by chairman of NGF and governor of Rivers State, Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

He said, “In light of the fact that Funds in the Excess Crude were disbursed in May 2013, there is need for the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala to provide explanation for accruals to this account from June 2013 to April 2015 which is estimated at over $ 20 billion.”

The governors also approved the establishment of a Governors’ Forum Academy to be tagged the NGF Leadership Academy that would be responsible for capacity building of governors and other officials holding public office to be overseen by the secretariat of NGF.
