Govt troops take over Gambia’s Electoral Commission

The Independent Electoral Commission in Gambia has been taken over by soldiers who according to reports entered the premises of the electoral body, instructing its chairman to leave and barred other employees from entering.

According to the commission chairman, Alieu Momar Njie, the security operatives stormed his office asking him to leave the premises.

“The military came to my office and said I am not to touch anything and told me to leave,” he said.

Continuing, he added that; “I am worried for my safety.”

Reports say the move came after Gambia’s veteran ruler Yayha Jammeh seemed receptive to a message from West African leaders that he accepts his election defeat and step down.

The delegation of West African leaders is led by Nobel peace laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and includes Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari, Sierra Leone’s Ernest Bai Koroma and Ghana’s John Mahama, who lost an election last week and conceded defeat.
