Grace Mugabe's immunity contested by assaulted South African model

South African model Gabriella Engels, 20, has asked a court in her homeland to annul government’s decision to grant Zimbabwe’s first lady Grace Mugabe immunity after allegedly assaulting her.

Willie Spies, a lawyer from AfriForum a civil rights group said on Thursday that South Africa’s foreign minister “misinterpreted the law” by “recognising the immunities and privileges” of Mugabe.

“[Maite Nkoana-Mashabane] applied the wrong principles, and a hearing into the case would start on September 19,” Speis said. He also added that the court has been asked to declare that the diplomatic immunity decision “does not confer immunity from prosecution”.

Engel’s was attacked by Grace with an extension cord, wounding her forehead and the back of her head for hanging out with her sons in a Johannesburg hotel.

Grace however turned herself in when she went to a police station to report the case.

According to reports, Grace allegedly arrived the hotel room with bodyguards and accused Engels of living with her sons, Robert and Chatunga, both in their 20s, who are based in the city of Johannesburg.
