A human rights organisation, Southern Nigeria Peoples Mandate (SNPM), has decried the state of roads in the South-East and South-South regions of the country.

The group stating that the federal roads in these two zones are in total infrastructural decay, called on the Federal Government to urgently begin repair of the roads in order to ameliorate the ordeal people of the two regions have been going through as a result bad situation of the roads.

Some of the roads mentioned by the group include, Nnewi/Amichi/Unubi/Uga/Akokwa/Arondizuogu/Umulolo/Okigwe federal highway; Enugu/Awka/Onitsha expressway; Enugu/Okigwe/Umuahia/Aba/Port Harcourt expressway; Aba/Ikot Ekpene highway; Umuahia/Ikot Ekpene highway; Ugep/Adim/Uyanga/Calabar federal highway; Asaba/Benin dual carriageway and Itu/Odukpani/Calabar federal highway.

SNPM in a press statement issued in Onitsha, Anambra State by its President, Augustine Chukwudum, bemoaned the neglect of federal roads in the regions since the past 20 years saying that “during political campaign and electioneering periods, they would be used as tools for political campaigns and once the election is over, elected office holders would sweep them under the carpet”.
