Guardiola insists Man City are not in title race despite 2-1 win over Burnley

Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola has reiterated that his side are not in Premier League title race this season even after his side defeated Burnley FC to climb to third place on Monday.

Recall that the Spaniard said, subsequent to their defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, that Man City are in a fight for a Champions League place and are not in the title race – after dropping 10 points clear off leaders Chelsea.

But after his side’s 2-1 triumph over Burnley, the former Bayern Munich coach said his opinion has not changed. When asked by a reporter, “Are Manchester City in the title race?”, Guardiola replied, “Yesterday no. Why today are we in the title race?”

Ten-man Manchester City moved up to third after they withstood a spirited Burnley fightback at the Etihad Stadium, as Fernandinho was dismissed towards the end of an even first half for a two-footed challenge on Johan Gudmundsson.

But when asked to comment on the Red card, Guardiola replied with some short answers.

Reporter: “What was your view of the red card for Fernandinho?”

Guardiola: “You are the journalist. Not me.”

Reporter: “You’re the manager. I’m sure the fans would like to know.

Guardiola: “Ask the referee – not me.”

Manchester City will travel to West Ham in the third round of the FA Cup on Friday, while Burnley will take on Sunderland the next day in the same competition.
