Guardiola switches focus to Manchester derby after Shakhtar defeat

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola says he is happy with his side’s performance despite falling 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk in a Champions League group stage encounter on Wednesday.

Having already qualified for the knockout stages with one game left, City with few changes to their starting XI trailed 26 minutes into the game after a clean shot from Brazilian Bernard put the home team ahead.

Shakhtar doubled their lead less than five minutes later, and were heading toward a clean sheet victory before Sergio Aguero pulled one back for City through a 93rd-minute penalty.

But Guardiola, who was in charge of his 100th Champions League game, congratulated his players and said they will go to rest and then prepare ahead of their Premier League clash with city rivals, United.

“Congratulations to them (Shakhtar), it was a good game. Their first goal was magnificent, and the second goal we didn’t defend that well,” the Spaniard said after the game.

“I’m so pleased for Tosin (Adarabioyo), Phil (Foden) and Brahim (Diaz) and how well they played. We came here to win, we couldn’t but we were trying until the end to do so. I’m happy for the performance.

“Now we are going to rest, come back tomorrow and prepare for the game (against Manchester United),” he stated.

City are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table with United in second place; both teams will meet at Old Trafford this Sunday.
