Guinness Nigeria loses N2b in first loss in 30yrs

Guinness Nigeria Plc would lay off some of its staff as part of a broad corporate restructuring aimed at repositioning the company for long-term growth.

In a statement made available at the weekend, Guinness Nigeria stated that it has begun the process of reviewing its organisational structure and design in order to enable it build a more effective and efficient business for sustained, long term growth.

Managing director, Guinness Nigeria, Mr. Peter Ndegwa, said while the objective of the restructuring is the broader goal of long-term growth, it is almost certain that the company will lay off some staff.

“While work is ongoing to determine the full extent of these changes, we know that headcount will be impacted but our focus is to take a broader look at our organizational design to enable us build a more effective and efficient organization. These changes are required because we are determined to create the right conditions for our people, our brands and our business to succeed,” Ndegwa said.

According to him, the company needed to reposition in order to achieve its objectives and response to an increasingly volatile operational environment.

“With a challenging market economy and slowing GDP growth, increasing inflation, oil price crisis, amongst others, we feel that this is a good opportunity for us to look at our structures, processes and culture and see how we may build a simpler, more agile and performance-oriented,” Ndegwa said.

He however reiterated the commitment of the company to the Nigerian economy pointing out that Africa is the fastest growing region for Diageo in the world and Nigeria is an important market for Diageo in Africa.
