GULF OF ARAB CRISIS: British foreign minister meets with Saudi Crown Prince

In a bid to ease tension in what has become the Gulf’s deepest rift in years, Britain’s foreign minister, Boris Johnson, has arrived in Saudi Arabia and will meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

According to Britain’s foreign office in a statement in London, after his meeting in Saudi Arabia, Johnson will also travel to Qatar and Kuwait for talks with senior figures from both countries.

It said Johnson would urge all parties to support Kuwait’s mediation efforts and “work towards de-escalation and Gulf unity for the sake of regional stability.”

Meanwhile, in its first public response to a statement from four Arab states which are leading a boycott against it, Qatar dismissed as “baseless” accusations that it was financing terrorism.

“The State of Qatar’s position on terrorism is consistent and known for its rejection and condemnation of all forms of terrorism, whatever the causes and motives,” Qatar’s state news agency said, quoting a senior foreign ministry source.

Days ago, the four – Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Bahrain – said in a joint statement said that Doha’s refusal to accept their demands to end the diplomatic standoff was proof of its links to terrorist groups.

In their statement, the four said the initial list of 13 demands they had put to Qatar was now void and they pledged further political, economic and legal steps against the tiny emirate.
